1554 Enlightened Black Ale – Beer Review
New Belgium Brewing Company is a employee-owned brewery that takes their social responsibility very seriously to their employees and the environment. Luckily they also take brewing very seriously. 1554 has been revived from an old Belgian beer recipe. They brew it with lager yeast at ale temperatures and have come up with a very drinkable brew. Today we are sipping on 1554 Enlightened Black Ale from the New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado. New Belgium’s beers are now for sale in 26 states — mostly west of the Mississippi River. 1554 is a dark beer based on an old Belgian recipe that they reconstructed from “antiquated script and outdated units of measurement.” It is 5.6% ABV, 21 IBUs and 200 calories for a 12 oz serving. They use five different malts in the beer — pale, carapils, black, munich and chocolate. Even though the name says “ale”, this beer is actually a lager. It is brewed with lager yeast at ale temperatures. According to reps from New Belgium, there is an antiquated law in Texas where all beer below 5 percent ABV is called “beer”, while beer above that level is called “ale”.
