Q&A: Making a movie??

Question by powerball: Making a movie??
if some 1 wrote a book, and years later they wanted 2 make it a movie, how much would it cost at the maximum for EVERYTHING u need to make the movie?? (cameraman, voice makers, etc?)
and if u want everything to happen in the movie JUST like the book, could u do that??? i mean yea, have some other things added but all the stuff that happend in the book: could they do that????
i mean what would the book writer have to pay??? what ppl do they contact to get through on MAKING the movie, and how to get a hold of the people that u want to do the voices of the characters, and all that other stuff????
this is on making a REAL movie that’ll get put in theatres and sold too.
Thanks

Honestly… that really depends on the story and the creativity of the film maker. For example…

One of Robert Rodriguez’s first films was “El Mariachi”. This was a brilliantly stunning and exciting film about a guitarist who comes to a small town and has his identity mistaken for an assassin. (For anyone interested… 2 sequels eventually followed which starred Antonio Banderas as the nameless Mariachi… they were called “Desperado” and “Once Upon a Time in Mexico”.)

Anyway… to make this first film, Rodriguez used things he already had… re-used everything over and over again… recruited his friends and family to participate… found creative ways to do cinematic camera shots and safely do slick looking stunts… asked people who were passing by to throw a line to the camera from time to time instead of hiring a bunch of extras… used a discarded wheelchair to steady his camera for the moving camera shots… and he and the star of his film slept at his mother’s house while filming.

In total… the film cost him $ 7,000 to make… and $ 6,400 of that was spent on the film stock. The other $ 600 was spent on everything else.

Go rent “El Mariachi” and enjoy it. Then, go read Rodriguez’s book… “Rebel Without a Crew”. It’ll give you some smiles… and some great ideas.
