Sororities 101????????
Question by SO MANY QUESTIONS: Sororities 101????????
What are they actually like?? I am assuming they aren’t like they are portrayed in the movies…..or maybe just hoping…
I know that hazing has been banned, but do they still get to boss you around and make you do chores in your first year?
Also, what are the living arrangements? How do you get to live in the sorority? Can you move in right away, or do you have to live in dorms for your first year? Also if you move in right away, what happens to all the money you paid for your meal plan and your dorm room?
I am a legacy to a sorority, under what conditions would they not pick me??
what are the houses like? Are they as nice as the houses in movies and television?
Basically i need a 101 on sororities!!!!! Any help would be helpful!!!1

Sororities aren’t like they are portrayed in the media. How they are varies by school and by chapter but basically its a way to make friends and get involved on campus and with the community.
Hazing is illegal in almost every state, and all national sororities have rules against it as well as rules from the school. You’ll have more responsibilities and have to attend more meetings and events as a new member. It’s not being bossed around, it’s learning about the chapter and how it works as well as training to take on leadership positions.
Living arrangements vary widely by school. There could be no housing, housing within a dorm, or a separate official house. Preference is given by class year as to where to live. Most sororities have some sort of requirement to live in for at least 1 year. Most schools you are not allowed to move in until after you are initiated. If you are at a school where you move in right away after receiving a bid, the school usually has something sent up where your money carries over.
Legacies are not guaranteed a bid. At most you’ll a little extra attention and an invitation to the second round (and that’s not guaranteed). If they don’t like you they won’t pick you or if you don’t meet the GPA requirements or have a good enough resume they can release you. Just like anyone else.
Housing varies by campus and by chapter from non existent to gorgeous. If they have houses recruitment will probably be held there. You’ll see them and be able to tell.
