I have Sony Vegas 9 but i would like After effects too. I have been babysitting my butt off for it. My friends and i like making videos of us dancing and music vids of us to our fav songs and stuff. I like editing them to make them look cool. Is Adobe After Effects (any version) worth the money if I use it a lot, like more than once a week? What is the cheapest way it sells for? 🙂 What are some things that it can do that Vegas can’t?

I run a small video editing and production company, so I thought I’d chip in my two cents to your question. I’ve used Vegas Platinum in my earlier days (ha), my company now uses Vegas Pro 8.0 for our professional editing, and I’ve dabbled with AfterEffects.
AE CS4 will run you $ 1000+. It’s not cheap. If you’re willing to settle for CS3, you can pick that up for a few hundred dollars these days. It’s still a perfectly viable program, capable of a lot of things.
AfterEffects is different from Vegas in that it’s designed for POST production special effects, touchups, etc. Vegas lets you edit your video, add transitions, etc, — assemble a basic movie. AfterEffects lets you add any and all sorts of imaginable modifications to that same video. Imagine lightsaber effects, light/dark settings, fire shooting from people’s hands (eyes, arms, wherever) — THOSE kinds of effects. Any time you see “Special Effects” in a movie, AfterEffects allows you to do those sorts of things. Vegas has VERY limited SFX featuers.
But here’s the thing: you don’t need AfterEffects unless you REALLY want it. There’s a cheaper way to achieve the SAME thing. There’s a program called Blender (blender.org) that is COMPLETELY FREE and, once you learn it, can do the same things as AfterEffects — and SO much more. It’s a CGI modeling program, but its usefulness is nearly unlimited. Blender is VERY complicated for the beginniner user, though (took me three months of heavy use to become proficient). If you’d rather not have to figure out, then AfterEffects is a good way to go. But if you have the time and the dedication, Blender can really, really help you out.
