What are my chances of being employed in and illustration or graphic design career career?
Question by Alisha S: What are my chances of being employed in and illustration or graphic design career career?
I’m planning to attend the Academy of Art University, but i’m stuck between two majors. I wanted to know what my chances of being employed in illustration are and what my chances of being employed in graphic design are.
Also, if i go into graphic design i would be interested in making Movie posters of CD covers, so if anyone knows of companies that specialize in these areas i would greatly appreciate it if you tell me.

You’re chances are as good as any other job you might want to go into. Graphic design (and illustration for the matter) is a very competitive field. You really have to want to make that a career in order to succeed. If you’re thinking of getting into it because you think it’s going to be real laid back and easy I would find another career path. With that said though, I’ve been a graphic designer for 5 years and I love it. Part of my job as a designer is illustrations, so as a designer you really can get the best of both worlds.
As for movie posters and cd covers, there aren’t any companies that I know of that specialize in that. Film producers and record executive teams typically hire and artist from a full service advertising agency for those types of things since they fall into the category of general advertising. And there are plenty of ad agencies out there. Of course your odds of working with movie posters are better if you work in an ad agency in Hollywood, or at least in that area of California.
