Q&A: Some help proofreading Japanese please?
Question by iceman: Some help proofreading Japanese please?
Anything in parenthesis might be wrong, anything outside of them doesn’t need to be proofread. Anything in brackets “[]” is just there to make sense of the sentences. The first sentences are Japanese to English, with me filling in some of the Japanese phrase. The English translation could be off too. Any help is most appreciated! Feel free to answer in Hiragana or Romanji, I’m only familiar with numbers in Kanji right now.
1. Hirokazu-san (no) kaban (wa) watashi (no) kuruma (wo) naka desu.
English – Hirokazu’s bag is in my car.
2. (Ano wa) yu tayori kyoku (wa) (totemo) ookii (ari)masen.
English – That post office isn’t very large.
3. (Ka)re (wa) kirei (ga) machi desukedo, shizuka (wo) (ari)masen.
[imagine you’re looking at a map and pointing at a town close to you]
English – This beautiful town isn’t quiet.
4. Watashi (wa) kinou Akebono [name of restaurant] (de) bangohan (wo) (tabemasu).
English – I ate dinner at Akebono yesterday.
5. Chyooto, yuukuri hanasu (?) kudasai.
English – Please speak a little more slowly.
The below are from English to Japanese only.
1. Nine Americans
Japn – Kyu Amerikajin
2. This book was not costly.
Japn – Kare wa hon wo yasui desu.
3. To my right is Mr. Tani.
Japn – Tani-san wa watashi no migi desu.
4. That movie was very interesting.
Japn – Ano wa eiga ga totemo (?) omoshiro katta desu.
As you can see, I’m struggling with “postpositions” or what’s inbetween actual words. The grammar itself is probably pretty terrible as well. Hope to improve on that. Thanks for your help!

4. That movie was very interesting.
Japn – Ano wa eiga ga totemo (?) omoshiro katta desu.
Of course this would depend on the time you saw the movie (tenses in Japanese are very different).
Omoshirokatta, ano eiga (saki no eiga) da ne (na). – You are implying that the movie was interesting because you saw it. Omoshiroi isn’t the same as English “interesting”.
My girlfriend would say this about a good movie – ano eiga tanoshikatta ne!
Sorry, English is my second language and Japanese is something I barely know.
