how do websites such as bebo, facebook …free movie sites etc… make money if you dont have to pay to become a member?

Most of the social media sites make money by the advertisements. For example on Facebook, MySpace etc, you will see ads at the top and on the sides of the home pages. Advertisers pay to have their ad there to capture customers.
Sometimes the company has so much capital that they don’t need the revenue. (yet) The company becomes more valuable based on the number of users and is typically sold for a profit at a later time. (Example: MySpace)
