For this part, i am going to use The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV TR) test. The DSM-IV TR covers all categories of mental health disorders for both adults and children. The manual is based on practical application rather than theoretical and focused mostly on describing symptom as well as statistic concerning which sex is most affected by the illness, the effects of treatment and common treatment approaches. Using the DSM test, we will asses Alex to identify if he has Post traumatic stress disorder since he had a car accident. As for his saying he sees himself different prior the accident could be due to the horror, helpless feeling he carried and death threat he experienced the moment his car hit severely. Although, Alex didn’t mention anyone being with him in the car during the accident, I assume that it is possible that someone dear to him was in the car and died as a result of the accident. He may felt worthless and unable to move physically at that event due to what he was witnessing in front of him, thus leading me to conclude that he may has developed intrusion, avoidance and hyperarousal symptoms.
Alex in the beginning mentioned that he watches horror movie as a result he has regular nightmares. It could be that “horror movie” is just an excuse Alex makes to link it with nightmares. In reality, it is more likely that he has nightmares not because of watching horrifying films, but due to the upsetting thoughts and flowing of the blood in the accident popping into his mind the moment he lay down on his bed. It is also possible that he spent the whole night watching the most horrifying movie thinking that he would forget the accident he had and death of his loved ones.
