Video capture is dark?

I’m using a Sony Digital Handycam. When I connect the video camera to my computer to capture video, the captured video is really dark, no matter what capturing software I use. Any help?
Also, Windows Movie Maker is the only capturing program that I have that lets me capture in widescreen, but I don’t like the .wmv files it makes. Does anyone know of free capturing software that can do widescreen and save better video file types such as .mp4?

The same thing happened to my canon elura (5 years old). It plays back in the camera fine, but loads dark, no one has any idea why or what to do, I finally just bought a new camcorder.
I will be anxious to see the answers to this question as I have asked it before.
