A good Movie Making Program?

I already have windows movie maker, and it always says ‘ windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to close ‘ when I press play to playback what I have put together so far. Why is this? Is it just my computer? If so what is another free program I can use? All I need to be able to do is add audio in the background, change audio levels and slow down/speed up video. Thanks!
