This TV commercial was made for an online dating agency, Sugardaddie.com who came to Kersh Media with the idea of making a TV commercial with a specific, filmic look. The director of photography for this shoot was Phil Bloom, who is known for his sleek, high definition and filmic style. The shoot took place at The Swan restaurant in West Malling, Kent and it was the perfect romantic location for two people to meet — of course we helped create the mood! We wanted to create the atmosphere of a bar in the evening so we first needed to black out all the windows. We wanted to go for a low key lighting set up using the minimum of lighting — most of the lighting set ups were simply one soft box cool light supplemented by the bar’s ambient and practical lighting. We used candles in the shots to create points of interest in the frame, giving it a romantic glow. Because we wanted a specific look with a narrow depth of field, we asked Phil Bloom to shoot on the Canon 7D DSLR. It’s high definition filming! Shooting on the Canon 7D meant we could achieve high definition, filmic look with a shallow depth of field.
