Are artists the biggest victims of irony?

Most wholly invest themselves into their work yet few, if any, people appreciate it.
People won’t watch the last Twilight movie and realize the directors subtle themes or care about the messages painstakingly weaved into a Harry Potter film. No one sits back and dwell on your choice of paint and clever brush techniques. All of this ‘vision’ and crap artist talk about with great enthusiasm is overlooked by the audience. It means nothing to them. Everyone just wants empty entertainment.
Why does the indie film-maker spend thousands of dollars and months of effort to make a film only his crew and family will care about, with the later being essential forced to watch?
