Before computers, how did movie credits get on film?

Question by : Before computers, how did movie credits get on film?
The art of film making is incredible, especially before there were computers. I also don’t know how they had special effects. I have heard of film overlapping to do some of the effects but i’m still unsure on how they put the credits on there. Writing on the film themselves? The penmanship is too perfect!
