Citizen Kane: is it the best movie ever?

Question by : Citizen Kane: is it the best movie ever?
AFI’s list of the best movies ever made (and some other similar lists) ranks Citizen Kane as the best movie in cinema history.. I’ve watched it, and it’s not bad, but honestly I would never put it even in the top 10.. Many claim that it’s because of the technical innovations in cinematography, but I don’t think that that’s what makes a movie a good movie.. All in all, after a while I found it simply boring! I think movies such as Gone with the Wind, Singin’ in the Rain, High Noon, The Philadelphia Story are way better! Can someone who knows a little about cinema please explain why this movie is considered so highly? And what movie would you rank as number one? 🙂

I am in agreement with you. It’s OK, but I actually find it terribly boring too. Nothing much seems to happen except for a lot of posturing. Lord only knows why it is considered to be number one. I haven’t figured that out yet! Probably because of Welles’ reputation as an enfant terrible of the movie world.
Films like: Casablanca; Patton: Lust For Glory; Seven Samurai; are a whole lot better. In fact I would say Seven Samurai is the best movie ever. So many famous directors, like Spielberg, say they have borrowed from its ideas and that it is like a movie making lesson in itself. Akira Kurosawa could have taught Orson Welles a thing or two.
