Like in Donnie Darko, they are reading a book in his english class and make references to it. Can you do that if the book is not public domain?
BY NO MEANS plagiarize, just have a character mention the book, or reference it.

Yes, you can, but you have to have to give the author credit, and you buy no means can rewrite anything in the book, unless you are doing it as a quote.
