Question by <3 Kooikers, Tollers, Borders: Do you think that movies like ‘Lady and the Tramp’ and ‘101 Dalmatians’ are encouraging backyard breeders…?
Well, I think so.
I mean, they’re touching stories, but in the end of movies like these, the unspayed/unneutered dogs end up having puppies, which is like promoting backyard breeders. In Lady and the Tramp one of the dogs was a mutt, too!
Also, when people see the breed/s of dog in movies like these, they all rush out and buy one, regardless of if the breed is right for them. And backyard breeders pop up all over the place, breeding heaps of dogs to make a few bucks and fill the demand. Then, a few months or even weeks later, shelters, pounds and even the streets fill up with this breed of dog as people lose interest, find out the dog isn’t working for their lifestyle (which is not the dog’s fault), or they see some other movie with another dog breed in it and hurry to buy that one.
Just my opinion. What are your thoughts?
Nandina: I meant one of the dogs that was allowed to breed (Tramp) was a mutt, which made all the puppies mutts.
Okay, let me clarify. I don’t blame the movies, as such – it wasn’t their intention, they didn’t want to encourage things like this, they just wanted to make people happy.
I mean, I love Lady and the Tramp too, and 101 Dalmatians.
Thankfully, there are many people out there who are responsible pet owners, and don’t just buy a dog because they saw it in a movie.
I guess, overall, the real problem is indeed backyard breeders and irresponsible pet owners who buy from said backyard breeders. But in my experience, even if Disney didn’t mean for their movies to have such a negative impact, there are still idiotic people who see something and have to have it – and there are always backyard breeders willing to give it, no matter how unsuitable the dog is for the lifestyle.

Um, in “Lady and the Tramp” ALL of the puppies were mutts, because the Tramp wasn’t a Cocker Spaniel…
