I was planning on renting Cowboy Bebop: The Movie just to see if I liked it, before I actually bought the series. So if I watch the movie will it make sense, or will it be confusing and spoil things from the show?

I would do a bit of research on the background of the characters, just so you have a general idea. For the most part, you will get it even if you haven’t seen the show. It is not terribly complicated. Just do a simple browse and you should be good! Hope you enjoy the movie!
