If you were to film in HD would that use up more battery juice ? Also. Is there a way in Sony Vegas video editor to make your videos in HD rather than to film in HD ?

Yes, it’ll use up your battery quicker as the camera is doing more.
And no, you need to record in HD. You can downgrade the quality. But never upgrade, it’ll ruin the quality. Just record in HD, it’s not that big a bother.
