In the hard financial times of today, many families are looking for fun things to do that will not only be enjoyable, but also affordable. Even though it can be a lot of fun to go to the theater to see a newly introduced movie, the cost can often be prohibitive, especially for bigger families or if you want to enjoy a bucket of popcorn and some cool sodas along with the movie. Even if you choose a more affordable matinee, it may still be a little too costly to go out to view a movie.

Start Up a Family Movie Evening

Instead of spending money to take your whole family to the theater, try instituting a family movie night. This might actually be more enjoyable than going to a theater, because there is virtually no end to the different movies you can select from, whether they’re on television, DVDs or even VHS tapes. It can be fun to take turns letting each family member select the movie for the night, which can provide excellent diversity in the shows you view. Home movies are always a fun thing to watch as well- maybe a birthday party you taped or some fun vacation memories. You can make family movie night as basic or detailed as you prefer. For instance, while most families like making a big bowl of popcorn to eat while watching the movie, in other families the kids like opening a popcorn stand in the hall, selling bags of yummy popcorn to their parents. Making tickets for the show may also be a fun craft for children to enjoy the afternoon before movie night. You’ll probably have so much of a good time that you might forget that you are also saving money.

Protecting Family Movie Night Remembrances

Don’t miss the opportunity to preserve some memories of the way your family enjoys family movie night together. Take photos of everyone watching the movie together, and some of of the children making popcorn and pouring drinks for movie refreshments. If the children make movie posters, movie tickets, programs or other “movie paraphernalia,” you owe it to yourself to save a few so that you will be able to look back one day and take pleasure in the memories. Displaying collections of photos, ticket stubs and other keepsakes in shadow box picture frames can often be a great way of preserving these memories, as well as adding a decorative touch to the walls of your family room. If you want to make something creative to hang on your walls, you could make a photo collage in a frame for each movie event you have- you might even make it a tradition to make these. There are many things that could be arranged in one picture frame to make a fun collage, such as a magazine movie ad, an old candy box, some family snapshots, and a ticket stub made by your kids. These souvenirs will be enjoyable for you to look back on one day when your youngsters are grown. Your children will probably have fun looking at the photographs from this time as well.

You’ll see what a good time you can have with your family if you use these ideas for your own family night.
