Question by Socially Challenged: Few questions about moving from small town to big city (Ft Worth)….?
I’m moving from a small town (8,000 population) to the Fort Worth area and just had some questions. This will be my first time moving so far away from where I was raised (4 hrs) and most of my family.
1) How easy is it to make friends?
2) Are the people in that area friendly or down to earth?
3) Whats the best way of dealing with homesickness?
4) Will people be rude to me cause I have a big country accent?
5) Is the crime a big problem in this area?
6) I love movies, film making and art, what there clubs or social gatherings for people who enjoy stuff like this?
And any other advice/tips I would appreaciate. Thanks. 🙂

Moving away from home is a scary thing.
How easy is it to make friends?
That is a matter of a persons personality……..smile and have an open manner with those you meet. Find or learn ways to engage in conversations with strangers. (there are probably some good books on this subject) Showing a genuine interest in what others are saying……being a good listener…..always makes people feel good around you….(plus it gives you ways to feel connected to new people.) And when they feel good being around you they will want to interact with you more. – Do your best to just be comfortable and yourself. Others appreciate “real” people just like you do.
I have found the people in Fort Worth to be just like the people everywhere. For the most part, they are as friendly and kind as you are to them. There are snobs in every city and corner of the earth. And there are wonderful, friendly people in abundance in those same areas. Unfortunately,, there are some cons, as well. Be smart, keep your wits about you, always be keenly aware of what is going on around you at ALL times. No matter where you are…..walking down a crowded or deserted street…..in a restaurant…..or in bed with a new love. Be relaxed….but aware!
Homesickness………call home if you need to. Call your Mother every week, it will make you feel better hearing her voice. As you make new friends and get comfortable the homesickness will subside. When it does…….still……….call your Mother every week, it will make her feel better hearing your voice.
Every where I go – even in New York City – people love my big country accent. And, you might just be surprised how many people in big Ft. Worth have big country accents.
Sorry, I don’t know about the crime or film arts in the Ft. Worth area. I’m sure the arts are there. I know Dallas is blossoming in the film arts area and it really isn’t so far from Ft. Worth. But I’m sure Ft. Worth has its own scene too.
