When thinking about going to film school, it is important to have some knowledge of film and its history. The best way to learn about something is to find out how it began and developed into what it is today. Below is a short introduction into the history of film and motion picture production.
Film or motion pictures as we know it began during the industrial revolution in the 1890’s. The first motion picture machine called the cinematographe was created by brothers Auguste and Louise Lumiere. The two brothers worked in a photographic firm owned by their father and Louis made some improvements on the still photograph process which resulted in the first motion picture camera.
Their very first film was Sortie des Usines Lumiere a Lyon (Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory) and it ran for about 50 seconds. They first held a private screening of their films and later held a public screening for a fee. Films soon became a popular source of entertainment because it removed the need for travelling to far distances to see amusement parks and other attractions.
This era of film and motion picture was also called the Silent Era since the technology to capture both film and sound together had not yet been invented. During this time, live musicians often accompanied the screening of films in order to add sound effects.
As the years passed and the technology developed, film increased in popularity and grew to become a big industry.
In 1906, the first animated film was produced but it was not until 1922 that sound was recorded together in film. Afterwards film studios began developing the making of films with sounds. The first ones created only contained music but later on dialogue was also introduced. The first spoken words in film were the lines “Wait a minute, wait a minute, you aint heard nothing yet” in the film the Jazz Singer.
It was also here in the early 1900’s that Hollywood became the film making capital. With the 4 main motion pictures studios located here, it soon became the home of film in the United States.
In 1929 the first Academy Awards were announced and the best picture award went to a movie entitled The Wings. Due to its great popularity a production code had to be formed in 1930 to determine which films were acceptable and which ones needed to be censored.
Film continues to develop in the next decades and the technology for creating it continued to improve. Nowadays, films are shot on digital cameras that capture precise movements as well as high definition imagery. Many things contributed to the development of film and it is important that we recognize them since they are the reason that films are available to us today.
