To be honest I’m not really aware of any totally free edit software that is very good, one thing I will say though is whatever you do, don’t use Windows Movie Maker, it’s terrible. It might be worth asking your school if they will pay for an educational license for something like Adobe Premiere so you can use that. There is a good free special effects software called WAX 2.0 that might be useful to you, but it’s not really designed for cutting whole projects together just adding special effects and titles to specific shots (There is another one called Jahshaka which is also supposed to be good, but it’s pretty awkward to use and there isn’t much in the way of help available for it).

The key to making a good zombie movie, no matter what your budget or special effects capabilities, is creating atmosphere and putting the viewer on edge. Make sure you use good atmospheric music and use unusual camera angles, switching between slow and fast cuts as the tension and pace of the movie increases. Music is often the key to successful horror movie scenes, pick some of the scariest scenes you know, watch them and then watch them again with the sound muted to see how much of a difference good music can make to a scene.

A good film for you to watch as research would be “Colin” – http://www.letmewatchthis.ch/watch-19509-Colin It was shot by a few friends with a Sony HD camcorder with a budget of about £50 but was good enough to get picked up by a film company and get a release, give it a watch and see what shooting and editing techniques they used to create a successful no-budget zombie movie.

Hope this helps.
