Gustine library reaches a milestone
GUSTINE – The Gustine Branch of the Merced County Free Library reached a milestone last month when it recorded its 100th year of service. The library was originally located in the back of Gustine Stationery Store next to the Park Restaurant, where Tri-Counties Bank is located today.

Kinsey Collection still a touchy subject
Indiana University Cinema was created in part as a showcase for its film holdings, but since they include Alfred Kinsey’s sexually explicit films and videos, it’s a complex issue. When Jon Vickers was interviewing for his job as the first director of the new Indiana University Cinema, he was told there might be a tricky problem if he was hired.

Deaths elsewhere: Dr. Billy Taylor, musician and advocate for jazz; Agathe von Trapp of singing family
Dr. Billy Taylor, a pianist and composer who was also an eloquent spokesman and advocate for jazz as well as a familiar presence for many years on television and radio, died Tuesday in Manhattan. He was 89.
