Handycam help PLEASE!!!?

I just purchased a Sony HD hard drive camcorder (HDR-SR11), and when I hook it up to my computer I can access the video files, but when I try to play them on my computer (using windows media player OR sony’s ultra-useless software) they won’t work! On WMP the files play but the sound cuts in and out and there’s big horizontal streaks on the picture whenever the camera is moved. On Sony’s useless software it just shows a broken video link. I have a one month old, quad core computer running vista home premium. PLEASE give me some advice on how I can get these files working – ideally I want to edit them into a movie using windows movie maker.
P.S. Why does Sony make the best hardware ever and then cripple it with their lame attempts at ‘software’?

I’m afraid I can’t help you, because I am as stuck as stuck can be, but just thought I ought to say that I have literally just asked the same question, so perhaps we should pool answers (if anyone has any) – !
