Well, Sonny’s leadership was more hot headed and aggressive, while Michael actually took time to plan things and consider the consequences. Sonny was more of a “shoot first, ask questions later” type, while Michael was more methodical and planned out all the details. This is evident in the scene where they’re debating how to handle the assasanation of the police officer in the restaurant. Michael fully understands that his actions will have consequences and plans accordingly. Sonny, as shown in the scene where his sister is beat, charges full steam ahead without any plan at all, which ultimately leads to his demise.
Corruption plays a large part in their lives. If you’ve not seen all the movies than this may be a spoiler but the more corrupt the character becomes, the more profound reactions it has on their lives. For example, Fredo became so corrupt and thirsty for power that he actually set his father up. This leads to Fredo being disposed of by his own brother! Sonny wasn’t necessarily corrupt but his actions also lead to his demise. The police comissioner was corrupt and this lead to his execution. Michael becomes so corrupt that by the time part 3 came around his character couldn’t sleep, was having anxiety attacks and all around health issues. Ultimately, the more corrupt the characters became, the higher the price they pay. While part 3 wasn’t great, the ending really shows the price that Michael ends up paying. Everyone assumed that he would get away clean, and while he did to a degree he paid the ultimate price.
Hope this helps you. Great questions about a great movie.
