How are 3D movies made to look so real, and why don’t they make more of them?

I went to the theater to see a 3D movie tonight, and forgot how cool they are. Why do they make so few of them? And what do they do differently while making them?
It was “My Bloody Valentine”

They are coming but it is more expensive for both the movie makers and for the theaters. The new format (Tru-3D and Disney 3d) requires a digital projector plus additional equipment plus the glasses.
There is another drawback in that they cannot use the same method for DVD and network broadcast.
Two upcomming 3-D movies are both Disney, UP! and their Nature movie showing on Earth Day.
Tip. Many theaters are charging extra for 3D movies but there is a workaround. With some chains, including AMC and Regal, the group activity tickets that you can get at Costco and some work employee services, will allow that ticket in the 3-D movie at no additional charge.
