How can I put my AVIs onto a DVD that is able to be read in a DVD player?
Question by : How can I put my AVIs onto a DVD that is able to be read in a DVD player?
I have a lot of AVIs that I would like my family to see. Is there a way that I could put them onto a DVD that can be read in any DVD player and maybe create chapters? Preferably without having to pay for a software, although any advice would be nice.
Also, for another project is there a program/software that I could use to make professional looking DVDs of videos that I have taken on my camera? I.e., menus with movies and music in the background.
Thank you all in advance^^

Yes, any DVD burning software, free or otherwise (and yes there are plenty of free ones available) will generally recognize standard AVI files. But, AVI is a container format, so the actual video may be encoded differently. Usually it doesn’t matter, but it really depends.
The video simply needs to be converted to MPEG-2 (all DVD videos are encoded in MPEG-2) and the resolution will probably be changed to 720×480 pixels automatically (all DVD videos are 720×480 pixels unless specifically authored differently or are from a country using the PAL video standard).
The software I use is Nero 8, but it is not freeware. However, it does come with a trial version. If you google “dvd author freeware” you should get plenty of results. Creating and burning DVDs is generally quite a simple task, and the more you do it the better you get at it.
Hopefully this information will at least get you started.
IRT Peter:
DVD Flick is great software and I’ve used it plenty. But, it doesn’t offer any authoring options, just burns the DVD to the disc for playback. You cannot use it to create menus and such.
