How do I make movie props?

Question by Eric: How do I make movie props?
I’m thinking about making a full on home-brew sci-fi movie, and I want to make/buy some advanced, broken machinery to put outside in the snow. Any suggestions?

Make it out of wood/cardboard/plastic and paint it silver, that’s what they did for the first star wars movie a long time ago in a galaxy… you know the rest!!!!
