How do you become a movie director?

Question by (Phire!): How do you become a movie director?
I know it’s amazingly hard, so how do they do it? And do people choose them to direct the movie or do they have to ask them or apply for the job? How do directors who sold their screenplay/script to someone, be able to get to direct it themselves? (lol i know it’s a lot of questions Dx ….

I hardly know anything about the industry but I’d imagine it takes talent, hard work, and luck. Well, that or rich/famous parents and a lot of connections.

The best piece of advice would be to just get a camera and start making the movies you want to make, don’t necessarily think ahead about getting to direct Terminator 4 or something. You need a reel/portfolio to get noticed and receive any type of funding. I think some states may even give grants. Directors like Robert Rodriguez and Kevin Smith got their starts by directing and financing their movies on a shoestring budget(in relative terms). Their movies did extremely well at Sundance and from there their careers took off. From there it’s just a matter of bumping into the right person. For example, some producer knew Smith was a comic book fan and he was almost given the chance to direct a Superman movie.

Speaking on more recent terms, there was some guy on Youtube who made a short film that was about giant robots, and some studio saw it and is now funding him 30 million to make an actual movie out of it. Which it just goes to show the power of modern technology and the opportunities available. You could also consider trying to get a job helping with a low-budget flick as an extra or part of the film crew. From what I can observe, there are a ton of ways to get your foot in the door. Which there are a million other people trying to get their foot in the door as well.
