How limited am I to making / editing videos?

Question by Adam M.: How limited am I to making / editing videos?
I’m trying to make a fan music video for a certain song. However, I have never used any video editing program or any experience with making a video (other than Windows Movie Maker).

What are some great programs for me to get for video editing?
And how limited am I with that program if I just shoot a footage with a video from a digital camera?

For example, lets say I take a footage with me opening up a bush, can I edit that footage with a program so that the camera acts like it just goes inside the bushes really fast and the whole scenery changes like I went underground or something? Do I need like a green screen for something like that or can it be done with video editing?

Another option I’d like to know if its possible without addition camera techniques and purely done on the program itself, I’d like to make the video ‘stutter’ like its just a flip book going really fast. Like the music video of radiohead- there there (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs1DX32t38c)

Pretty much I have a video recorded from a digital camera, how limited am I if I just use a video editing program and not use extra cameras and such?

To make the visual “stutter” is usually called “stop-motion”. Several stop-motion plug-ins available. I’ve seen great visual on youtube using a cheap, and I mean cheap-butt digital camera (single shot). I’ve seen really funny stuff of dudes sitting on the ground and act like they are driving a car.

Hardware: you need a cable to connect your handycam to your computer and then capture the DVraw. From there, I like Linux because all the software is free (as in “free beer”). One industrial-strength software is called Cinelerra. goto www.metacafe.com and search for ‘cinelerra’ (also on youtube).

3D programs such as blender.org has a video editor. Another one I like is Kdenlive. With Linux, it takes a combination of several tools.

Time is your enemy. It takes forever and a day to render DVraw into edited video. The only speed comes from doing it right the first time. That’s when I really appreciate AMD-64 single-core, 3400 mgHz with SATA-cable hard drives, 4-gig memory. However, I have NEVER topped out 2-Gig RAM. The CPU, on the other hand can really heat up and System Monitor shows 90-97% usage typically.
