One question often put to me in forums and on my blog is how to get started selling stuff online. What stuff should I sell online? How to sell stuff online? And “what and who the heck can I believe out of all these dudes trying to sell me their products”. The truth is, to get started, you may not need to buy anything but the basics. As you get more advanced there are more in depth courses available for various techniques. For now don’t over complicate things and get “analysis paralysis”. Let’s keep it simple. Starting out you’ve got two choices: Selling other peoples products or selling your own. If you don’t have your own then find a product you like and sell that for a commission. It saves a lot of time researching and creating your own product and if the product sells, there’s nothing stopping you creating a better product. It also allows you to build your own list of potential customers.

How to sell stuff online- The basics.

The first thing to do is to go to Clickbank.com here you will find a humungous list of stuff to sell from every niche to just about any niche. Pick about 10 products you like, then it’s time to see if they sell. There are two tools I recommend for keyword research. One is Google’s keyword tool external and the other is Wordtracker. Google is free. Wordtracker’s free and also has an advanced paid version. When you’ve done this go to Google and type in the search term in phrases (“”s). If it has more than 30,000 competing pages just leave it alone for now. Don’t make the mistake a lot of people do and just go for high volume traffic. Look for buying keywords. For example, “SEO course” may have 100 searches a day and “Buy SEO course” may only have 20 searches a day-which would you choose?…. I’d go for “buy SEO course”, this shows commercial intent, the searcher has indicated he/she wants to buy an SEO course. Finding buying keywords, even when they have a low number of searches, is how to sell stuff online.

Now you have some buying keywords you need to narrow your Clickbank collection of products to just ONE (keep it simple remember, there’s no rush). Now, with that one product, which should have had the best keywords, pick the 5 most commercially intent keywords with the best search volumes. From here, create 5 articles using those keywords in each of the articles. You can then either manually submit them to a list of article directories or use one of a range of free automation tools available by simply searching Google. The key here is to create your own Bio at the end pointing back to a landing page, this way you can create your own list of potential customers. Again a search online will reveal numerous information on creating landing pages from novices to the experienced web designer. Nvu is just one free application you can use to create a no fuss web page. It’s at this time you may have to put your hand in your wallet. You will need an autoresponder to collect the names of your potential customers. I recommend Aweber or Getresponse. Both have excellent tutorials to show you exactly how to use everything which makes things much simpler.

The next thing to do may seem a little complex but I do recommend you take action. It really is the best way to learn. Conquer your fears and besides, there’s a ton of info online…..Ok we’re going to make a video promoting our Clickbank product. Mac’s and PC’s both have free movie creation programs on them and they’re more than adequate. If you’ve bought the Clickbank product, which you should have ( it makes it much easier to promote!), create a video walk through of what the product is and show the buyer what they can get. Spend a day playing around, create a script and read it into your webcam or camcorder, or if you don’t want to been seen, just create informative slideshows and narrate over them. Take action, it’s not hard when you do it.

Now, assuming you taken your time and created your video we now need to submit the video to the video directories. Again a search online will reveal all the available directories including Google video, YouTube, Viddler ,etc. Traffic Geyser offers a service where the whole process can be automated at a monthly charge. Again make sure you put a link in the video back to your landing page. On each of the video sites you will have a URL for the video. Copy and paste each one and download Social Marker (another free tool) and submit it to all the bookmarking sites available on there.

Are you still wondering how to sell stuff online? Well if you followed that ok you should start seeing some rankings and getting traffic, interact with your list and give them good, useful relevant content that they want and need. Always think, “would I want to receive this if I was interested in this subject?” If not, don’t send it!

Okay, I have this story that’s going to be huge and I want to turn it into a film…. But I dont want to just sell my story away and let others control it like Jk Rowling did with Harry Potter, I want to be a part of the film, maybe as a producer to have some creative control with the script, outfits, score, etc How do I do this? Is there a way to partner with a major film company instead of simply selling? Will I have to create a company like George Lucas to do this? Can anyone offer me some help! And to the other guy. I’m not worried…. I’ve planned everything out. It will be pretty easy for me to get published and be successful in that aspect. I’m positive the film companies will contact me to do the deal after these books take off. I wont even have to chance them. My problem is creative control when I sell them…(Which is what the question is about) because the films are how I will make my living. I wish I could get some answers to my q instead of preachy nonsense. lol

Actually JK Rowling did have some control: she had the final word in the scripts and decision on the actors/actresses and some more details in the films but I guess you should just try to negotiate when the time comes and you can work with an agent.
