how to start a film career?
Question by SoccerMang: how to start a film career?
Im halfway through grade 11 and I am really interested in making movies, commercials, music videos, or some kind of videos for a living. Obviously i would like to one day make a full length movie that is screened in theatres and all.
It doesnt really matter to me (right now) what position of movie making i get as long as i get to work with a large group of people (script writer, director, im not really sure). The main thing im looking for in making these movies, is lifelong friends and ofcourse money. I watched the LOTR and instantly fell in love with those movies, i know its a small chance that i will make a movie as great as those ones, but the cast and crew looked like they had the greatest times of their lives.
So im in film class right now working on 2 different short films with some friends. One is for a certificate for winning a film contest. The other is for $ 1000 prize money. If i win both of these would it be a good start on a film career.
What schools could i go to? Which ones are the best? and (funny question) is there any way ill be able to work, even with a small part, on the Hobbit 2 with Peter Jackson and everyone?

Film is a tough field to get into unless you have talent or connections. The best way to demonstrate your talent is to make films. One of the best ways to learn about how to tell a story using film is to watch good films, not just the cartoon- and comic-book oriented output of the last 10 years. Get the AFI’s list of the best 100 films and start watching your way through them. Watch Steven Spielberg’s films, starting with Duel, and see how he goes about telling a story, drawing the viewer into the story. What techniques does he use to build suspense, to make the viewer tense or uneasy, or to incorporate humor into his storyline? How and why did he break the rules in telling his story?
The top film schools in the U.S. are NYU, USC and UCLA, all of which can help provide the internships and contacts to get you started. They are also the hardest film schools to get into. You’ll need to meet their general admissions standards and have film experience or something to show your potential talent such as a completed short film, finished script, etc.
The Hobbit will probably be filmed in New Zealand, where Peter Jackson also filmed LOTR, so unless you have contacts or live in New Zealand, you’re probably out of luck.
