I have always had a desire to direct movies and now that I am in middle age I am thinking about changing careers. I know that in most likelihood by the time I realize my dream I could be at retirement age, but I want to go for it anyway. The thing is that I know nothing about the industry or how it actually works. I am a very imaginative writer so I think I am going to start writing stories to see where that takes me.

What is the first step I should take to making movies? What are the next few steps?

First, you must make a short film. Have a writer write a script for an idea of a short film then use the script and some people and direct the film. No special effects is necessary. If you think the movie is good, simply post it on Youtube after copyrighting your material. Then I think you can send it to the Academy where if the academy likes your movie, then the movie might get nominated, and then if you win the Academy Award, your path is opened.
