Question by Samantha: I have Some Questions on How to Become a MOVIE PRODUCER ????? Please Help ?
Hi,
As some teens are they can tend to worry about their future. I’m not sweating bullets, but i’m also not having the subject be ignored either. To start things off I’ll tell you how it all began. I was about 5 years old and my first real movie was ‘A Toy Story’ where as a kid i was awed by what i saw i had to watch it 11 times (Not Kidding Either). I soon became wrapped in drawing and making cute animals in pre-school and i was complimented by many parents on my art. As time passed i began to wonder about my future job. A Firefighter, An Architect, A Policewoman, A Photographer. By the age of 13 I had been introduced by a man in my mom’s cororate buisness who said how if he could go back in time he wishes he could’ve been a movie producer. I never once had thought of that before. I asked him a few things about what they do. He explained to be in that job you have to be tough, skilled, sometimes multi-talented with the arts, you have to be able to keep the budget to a movie well together, and that every scene runs smoothly.
So here I am …….14 (turning 15 in Jan.) and still striving for that job.
Questions :
* How do You Become a Movie Producer of a Corp. such as ( Warner Bros., Disney, Paramount Pictures) I understand that to do this you have to convince them that your movie will promote their Corp. , but How the H*ll Do You get to their desk and say it in the first place?
* Which one would be the best one to work for (In Your Opinion)?
* Is it possible to have a partnership while you are making movies for Your Distributers?
* Is it difficult to Become a Movie Producer for a Distributer or to get a meeting with them to disscuss your thoughts on your Movie ?
-Even if You’ve gone to college for it, are talented, and do your job well?

This is exactly what I wanted to be at your age. I even went to college to study it. As soon as I got there my lecturer told me there was not much hope unless we were the best of our kind, better than university graduates as there is A LOT of competition in this field. It’s also got harder due to the recession as money is an issue and a movie costs so much to make.
Anyway the best way to get into the industry’s to volunteer. That way potential employers see you as reliable and dedicated. It may take years to be recognised by a respected company, and you may not ever get noticed by one of the large corps which you’ve stated.
If you want to start with the large corps I would look into their training schemes from their website. I’m sure they have some scholarships available which will once again be full of competition.
However if you want to start from scratch I would contact small Film/TV/Radio stations near and ask to volunteer or have a Saturday job there. That way you build up your contacts and your knowledge/experience, which attracts employers towards you.
But as you are still young you might change your mind as I did, if not think about what subjects will mostly help you get to where you want. (I presume they are different to those courses in England)
I wish you the best of luck in whatever you do though.
x
