Is there a program or somthing im doing wrong that would make them a smaller size?

Welcome quality video editing.
Simple solution is to get a gruntier PC with a bigger HD

You can render the tracks to a smaller size for use on the web but for standard quality viewing, bigger and clearer is better.

Sony Vegas should be able to export as a “smaller” clip although you will loose some video quality the smaller you make the clip.

Best codec to use is h.264 or mp4
