I need help?
Question by Mary: I need help?
I have a hitachi DZ-GX3200A that i used to record a day with my friends, including one who is moving away on tuesday down south to SC. (im in pa) I really wanted to do something special and give her this movie. problem is i cant because the dvd wont convert onto my computer. I used a non rewritable dvd disc to record it and i finalized the disc. I have a registered version of total video converter 3.10 and it wont take the file and convert it into mpeg2 which is what the camera manual says it needs to be converted to. I would prefer to save it to my computer so i can edit it and make a menu for the disc, but at the least i would like to burn another dvd to give to her. I have rewritable dvd discs to use and a sony vaio computer with a dvd burnable drive. can someone please help me convert this disc or get a converter that will work with my disc file?
i need something by today because tuesday morning we are leaving for a trip to the beach for the week and i wont have a computer to use then and i will most likely see my friend tomorrrow so i can give it to her.
thanks for trying to helpp… but the handbrake thing wont even run. i saved it and extracted the files and nothing came up…..and then i just clicked open when it was downloading and it sorta dissapeared too so idk.

I’m not exactly sure how this all works, because I’ve never used a DVD camcorder before. But I’ll give it a shot since you need this video today. I assume on the DVD there is a folder called “VIDEO_TS”, since that’s usually the way DVDs work for a DVD player. Inside there should be .vob files if I’m not mistaken. If that’s the case, then this DVD is just like any other commercial DVD but without the copy protection. I would recommend trying a program called Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/). It will create an MPEG4 file that you might be able to use in editing software, or at least use that video converter program to convert to MPEG2 if that’s what you wanted.
I hope I could at least help a little bit. I’m sorry I couldn’t give you a very good answer as to what to do! Well, good luck with that! (Oh, and I’ll try to check back if you wanted to add additional comments to your question to let me know how that went)
Edit/2nd Response: I’m sorry that handbrake wasn’t working. But I just found a website which may help. When the DVD from your camcorder is in your drive, try copying all of the .vob files you can find onto your computer. Once you do that, the website says you can just rename them from thetitleofyourmovie.vob to thetitleofyourmovie.mpeg and then once you do that, it is supposed to be editable in Windows Movie Maker. I know that the video on commercial DVDs is usually MPEG2, so maybe it will work! I’m on a mac and I don’t have any easy access to any DVDs anyway, so I’m sorry I can’t try it out. Maybe this will work?
The website I found this on was http://www.jakeludington.com/camcorder/20070612_editing_dvd_camcorder_files.html if you are interested.
I hope I can help you to give the video to your friend! I did a very similar thing for my sister’s graduation. I think it’s a great idea for a gift! Good luck!
