I could be wrong, but I don’t believe there is any decent off-the-shelf software that can do 2D to 3D conversion of footage. The companies that do this currently have spent enormous sums of money developing their own programs, and the best are all propriatary. Here are two of the leading companies in the field right now.

IMAX
IMAX uses its own proprietary 2D to 3D conversion technology. The Dimensionalization system operates on In-Three custom designed workstations running hardware and software designed by its development team. The process is roughly analogous to the post-production techniques used in the creation of 3D graphics, animation and vfx. Operators create 3D versions of scenes utilizing a wide variety of proprietary software tools, many of which are automated and computer-optimized algorithms at their disposal. Films they have done include SUPERMAN RETURNS and HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX.

IN-THREE
Organized in 1999 to pioneer research and development in stereoscopic reconstruction of two-dimensional images, In-Three developed and patented a process called “Dimensionalization” along with a suite of software called “IN3D” — the “In-Three Depth builder” — that make it practical to convert 2D films into high quality, artifact-free 3D films. Conversion of legacy material using the process starts at about $ 50,000 per minute and can reach more than $ 100,000, depending on the complexity of the imagery in terms of visual effects and other elements.

Its process, utilising their proprietary IN3D software, takes 2D film content and creates a so-called second-eye view. Depth grading is then applied to the images and elements of the frame are either pulled forward or pushed backwards, changing the distance at which they appear to the viewer. These processes can take place in real-time allowing for the technicians to touch-up elements as they go, on a clip-by-clip basis.

In-Three’s technology was licensed by Industrial Light and Magic to convert Tim Burton’s NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS 3D for Disney. The Disney Company will also be converting TOY STORY I and II, plus the animated BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
