Kudos to Jai Tank for making a film like, Madholal Keep Walking. Hell with the system that held back its release in theatres for two years.
The problem on film making is that you cannot react instinctively & sensitively, the way Jay & his brilliant team has, on a subject that is fiery if served hot or otherwise has the making of an also-ran-coach in a moving train of events.
The Mumbai Train Blast was such an event.
Jai’s film is not just on the event but about the life & times of Mumbai. India’s maximum city is more often than not, portrayed in coarse image-strokes through the lives of its elite class in Bollywood films, but Madholal is a towering exception. Jai’s film is not a Bollywood movie in the first place, but a film made in Mumbai about common mumbaikars, in the language of Hindi.
So, it’s a vibrant &
heart-throbbing picture of suburban trains, chawls, mazaak-masti & bonhomie or sheer survival chemistry of its people composed of all the caste, creed, language, region & religion of India.
Madholal Keep Watching is quintessentially Mumbai. It’s a portrayal of Bombay that’s more real & true than Maniratnam’s suprehit Bombay. As a mumbaikar himself, Jai could touch a raw nerve that Mani as an outsider could not. The film has a quite few memorable moments of highs & lows of life of ordinary mumbikars affected or unaffected by every twist, turn & implosion in this speeding city-ark. The fun of Mumbai is frothy as the poignant moments are heart-wrenching.
Jay ends his film in an agit-pop way. Another very rare way of ending a film these days. Perhaps, his sensitivity stopped him to go for a predictably optimistic end. So he traded happy-ending
for a risk. And there’s a pitfall. The throes he felt as film-maker may fail to kickass a hopeless bloke, precariously hanging from a zipping Mumbai local.
