my favorite films of the year (seen for the first time)
1. the last picture show (1971)
stark, delicate, and moving l.mcmurtry script; a unique picture like no other ever made
2. the unknown (1927)
armless lon chaney silently falls for flapper joan crawford; near gothic intensity
3. manufactured landscapes (2006)
doc of edward burtynsky’s photographic china. quietly exposes a great perspective.
4. the misfits (1961)
painful, unromantic arthur miller story featuring clift, gable and monroe
5. the swimmer (1968)
beautifully existential and freeing (portaging), ending in a tragedy of abandonment
6. mar adentro (2004)
moving cinema with the convincing javier bardem as an aged, bed-ridden anti-hero
7. i am a fugitive from a chain gang (1932)
k’s trial in ’30s america; a courageous contribution to end the south’s chain gangs
8. control (2007)
a dark, convincing biopic of joy division front man ian curtis; looks and sounds perfect
9. the body snatcher (1945)
val lewton employs karloff in a fright flick based on the rl.stevenson story; great fun.
10. from here to eternity (1953)
why not. i did see this for the first time recently. i guess i can’t get enough of burt lancaster. (i hear he was a big fan of no.2 above.) and according to the nwff, it makes for a great holiday movie… er, as festive as ‘eyes wide shut’ anyway.
