One More Thing

I thought I’d post my thoughts on the "One More Thing" media event from today.

1) Think Secret appears to be receiving some crap "scoops" lately… has Apple figured out how to keep them at bay?

2) iMac: These are neat features, and the integrated camera is a great idea for it’s target audience. (I really like that the screen acts as a built-in flash!) Not something I’d be too excited about, though. (I have an iSight for the previous iteration of this iMac and like that I can move it.) Bluetooth standard is great and so is the bundled remote control. I’d prefer that I not be tied to the room my computer is in to use it, though. In other words, can I control my music that is playing through my living room speakers "from" my living room with said remote control? If not, it seems pretty pointless.

3) Video iPod: This is in line with what I expected from a video ipod. The TV Shows offering was a pleasant surprise, and I’m sure Jeff is probably ecstatic. My only real issue is that the TV shows are 1) currently limited to ABC and Disney and 2) Limited (essentially) to viewing via an iPod. I want TV shows on my TV, and 320×240 won’t really allow for this as far as I can see. I fully expect both of these issues to be addressed in the future. (More stations will sign on, and hopefully we will in the future have a full-fledged music store and a set top device for streaming full sized video (movies and tv shows, etc) to my living room TV.) Admittedly, this is the first new iPod since the Shuffle that I can see myself buying. (The Nano is great.. but I’m waiting for the coating to improve.) Question: Is the new software and remote available as a separate purchase? I hear yes, but haven’t seen a price.

4) iTunes 6. Remember iTunes 5? That’s so yesterday. (And wasn’t even able to tie it’s own shoes, yet.) I think there are some impressive features here. It’s about frickin’ time that we can review content! (And personal recommendations are great too. I’m not sure yet if they will take into account music I’ve bought up to now with previous versions of iTunes.) These seem to be some of the community features that Jeff has talked about, but I’m sure they don’t go as far as he would like. Again, the videos are great, but not quite where I need them to be for me to want to buy much. (I might check out some music videos if they’re cool enough. I was just thinking that buying a music video should also mean buying the song itself as well, but I bet it doesn’t.) Lost, eh… Desperate Housewives, double eh. Plus, without a video iPod, they’re kinda pointless for me anyway, aside from the whole "not being into those shows" thing. I’m waiting for and fully expecting a movie store. If I DO make video purchases at this stage, it will be to show that people WILL purchase.. so that the suits will okay bigger and better things and we’ll get Movies and NBC and CBS and Comedy Central and Cartoon Network onboard. (Can you say "The Daily Show?") Again, there’s a lot of neat features with iTunes 6 and I’m glad that I get something to download and play with, as I can’t currently afford (and don’t particularly need) the rest.

Now I just can’t wait to get home and install iTunes! (I hear they’ve rounded the corners off again, which was about the only thing I didn’t like about the iTunes 5 updated look.)

To sum up: Everything they introduced is neat, but I mainly see the event as a tantalizing glimpse of the really great things to come in the near future.
