As an Indian moviegoer, one has always wondered why doesn’t Bollywood make some amazingly intelligent movies like those made in Hollywood. But how do they react when they eventually get one? The reason behind majority of melodramatic nonsense movies in Indian

–~~~~~~~~~~~~–

Cinema is only due to the taste of our audience and hence most people play safe.

Teen Patti is one such movie which requires intelligence and the movie makes you think, agreed that it falters big time in the end but still atleast such a movie should have recieved a decent start. The director Leena Yadav splendidly tells a story about how much greed can cost you and that more the money one gets, the more greedier he becomes.

The only problem here is that the presentation is in such a way that an average moviegoer gets one bouncer behind another. This movie clearly requires brains and definately some knowledge of Probability, a theory of Mathematics as one won’t be able to digest what the director tries to convey if they are unaware of it.

The story is about Professor Venkat(Amitabh Bachchan) who cracks a theory that would redefine probability.

–~~~~~~~~~~~~–

He is further convinced to experiment this theory in real world by Shantanu(R Madhavan), a colleague of Venkat.

Venkat does not have any interest in money but he is convinced by Shantanu to try his theory on Teen Patti which can rake in the money. The movie becomes more interesting once the along with the professor, students come into the picture and explore the dark alleys of gambling.

The story reaches its peak when they get an unknown call. Who is the caller and why does he call makes your expectations rise high. But similar to Karthik Calling the second half of this movie starts loosing grip.

There are many cameos like Ajay Devgan and Jackie Shroff to name a few, but they seem forced. Although the grip seem a bit loose there are quite a few sequences which make the graph of Teen Patti, a rollacoster ride.

The director Leena

–~~~~~~~~~~~~–

Yadav, has done a pretty good job but the treatment of the story should have been made more commercial. Two songs Niyat and Ikka Badshah Rani are nice to hear in an average album by Salim Sulaiman.

Amitabh Bachchan is the heart of Teen Patti and this movie wouldn’t have been possible without him. R Madhavan gives a splendid performance once again and displays grey shades with elan. Its a pleasure watching Sir Ben Kingsley and Amitabh Bachchan together and the scenes between them are just too good and their track is blended nicely with the story. The 4 students are all new faces, get equal footage and give a confident performance.

This movie is definately intelligent, a rare experience for the Indian audience but the start has not been good at the box office. No wonder most producers and directors here prefer making paisa vasool mindless entertainers

rather than a movie like Teen Patti.

If a film like Teen Patti fails at the box office, then we loose the right to demand sensible and intelligent movies in Bollywood.
