Movie Script Format

Movie Script Format

Writing a movie script is entirely different from doing an essay or composing a poem. It follows a certain style and adheres to standards that are known only to scriptwriting. Thus, if you are a beginner in this field, having knowledge on what a film script format is supposed to be will help you become an effective scriptwriter.

What does a movie script format look like? How is it different from other literary forms? Technically, it has to be written in such a way as everything is separated based on the scene numbers, dialogues and the characters. In doing this, you need to follow the standard movie script format which you can get from books or download from the internet. If you want your script to sell, it has to follow such format. Otherwise, no matter how brilliant your script it will most likely be thrown away by reason of technicalities.

Did you know that proper margins are very important in as far as movie writing format is concerned? Left hand margins should contain the stage directions while the center of the page should contain the dialogue and their corresponding characters. Proper capitalization when necessary and punctuation have to be observed as well. If you want to put u a good impression to the directors and producers, following the right movie writing format and being keen on its other details will do the trick.

Once in a while, a workshop on making a film script is conducted by production companies or schools. You can attend these workshops if you want to learn newer or more techniques on script writing. You can also get help from the experts such as your college English professor ir anybody who has a background on scriptwriting.

Writing a film script may be difficult at first but with more practice, perfecting your skills will come in due time. You can check on books `for more materials. The internet is also one place wherein you can get all the information you need about coming up with the right movie script format. Most of all, nothing comes close to constant practice.

Question by wd96: Who would you rather have be this character in a movie? 10 points!!!?
Here’s the script. I want to fill the part of Erik Marshall.

————

Erik is now in a meeting room at the police station. Other cops are there including the chief.

Chief
There’s nothing else for us to investigate.

Erik
Nothing?

Chief
I’m sorry, Erik.

Erik
(angry, shakes his head) Don’t you dare be sorry for me. And don’t you dare tell me there’s nothing left for us to do. (beat) We know who did this.

Chief
No we don’t.

Erik
Yes, we do. You said yourself who our biggest suspect is.

Chief
Yes, Erik, suspect. We don’t have any evidence to convict Mr. Pollari.

Erik
(stands up) What the hell are you talkin about? We found loads of crack money in his ceiling and a few bags of his goddamn drugs. And to top it all off, we even found an unlicensed firearm in his apartment.

Chief
Which proves nothing.

Erik
(slams his fist against the table) That bastard killed my brother! Don’t you dare tell me there’s no proof!

Chief
Detective Marshall, I’m going to have to ask you to calm down.

Erik
Calm down? Bullshit! Bullshit!!

Chief
(gestures to two cops by the door) Officers Marrone and Dominguez, please escort Detective Marshall from the room.

Marrone and Dominguez move toward Erik. Erik jerks away. Moves toward the chief as Marrone and Dominguez latch on to his arms.

Erik
(exasperated) But Chief—!

Chief
But nothing, Detective. We already got Mr. Pollari on charges of drug dealing and carrying that unlicensed weapon. We all know how personal this is for you, so until it’s over I want you to stay away from this case.

Erik sags in Marrone’s and Dominguez’s grips.

Erik
(shocked) What?

Chief
I’m sorry, Erik.

Marrone and Dominguez jerk Erik to his feet. Screen goes to black.

Chief (V.O.)
But there’s nothing more we can do.

————

Erik is short-tempered. A simple detective now, he later becomes head detective of the department. His brother was recently killed from an overdose of drugs, and Erik is convinced that a man named Karl Pollari did it. Karl did sell drugs, but it couldn’t be proved that it was his drugs that killed Erik’s brother.

I was thinking either Cillian Murphy or Karl Urban for this part, but if you’ve got another suggestion, that’d be great. Thanks!
Ten points to the best answer!!
Alright, maybe I should add something here:
He needs to be white (no racism intended, I already have an actress for his daughter), young, and fit.
Just think of what your actor would look like in suit and tie, firing a gun.

Charlize Theron's evil Queen steals the spotlight in 'Snow White'
A different actress might have been able to sell that, but Stewart can't — especially in the face of Theron, who munches up the movie like it's a tasty Cornish hen, and whose final defeat seems utterly artificial and script-mandated.
