Narikuravar
In Tamilnadu, NFSC has collaborated with Bhakthavatsala Bharathi (Head, Department of Anthropology, Pondicherry Institute of Linguistics and Culture, Puduchery) to establish a Digital Community Archive in the settlement of Ashakulam, Villupuram district, Tamilnadu for the Narikuravar community. Being a nomadic community, the Narikuruvas face extreme discrimination in society. They are labeled thieves and plunderers and are often not allowed to stay within villages and town or sell their wares. Being extremely disjointed as a community have further weakened their voices against oppression. Their culture, a very live and constantly changing one, lacks any kind of documentation as does Vaagri boli, their language which still exists as a creole. The need to integrate the community too is of utmost importance. And so is the need to educate the common populace about the Narikuravas and their culture and tradition. These are some of the issues that are addressed in this documentary. NFSC has been consistently pursuing its core activity of documenting and building the community’s cultural resources. This documentary film on the Narikuravas titled Narikuravar was produced by National Folklore Support Center in 2009 as part of the project of Narikuravar Digital Community Archive funded by TATA Educational Trust. The cinematography and editing for the film is done by S.Rajasekhar based on the script by Rayson K. Alex.
