Q&A: 550d vs d3100? which?

I was just wondering if you guys could help me choose between a Canon 550D or Nikon D3100.

I like the video in the Canon 550D, I have seen hundreds of short films made using 550d and they were just amazing, Someday, I want to produce those kinds of short films.

I like the pictures taken using the Nikon D3100, I saw loads of them here in DPP and a lot in Flickr/etc. They are just so vivid and so crisp and it has the guide mode.

Its like I want to take pictures with the D3100 and video on the 550D

I am a beginner and I want to take Photography as a hobby seriously.

The 550D is a little bit more expensive than D3100
but 550D has the external jack and the autofocus motor

I want to be more on portraiture, low-light, motion/sports, travel, movie-making.
(I know that it depends on the lens but some in-camera features might just do the trick, which do you recommend?)

Can both produce the same video and photograph?
since their specification is almost the same
550D= 18mp, 1080p
D3100= 14mp, 1080p

what’s their biggest difference?

You seem to contradict yourself.

You already like taking pictures with one camera and video with the other. You said you want to take Photography seriously. Then I probably wouldn’t get a camera that I liked taking videos with.
