Q&A: Am I making the right decision? Should I really be an actress?
Question by sparkle278: Am I making the right decision? Should I really be an actress?
I have many talents I want to develop, and one that I have been getting into lately is acting (film & television). I live in a small community, and am taking these acting classes by a director (he has a small resume) (he is the only classes my agency offers, and he is supposed to be amazing or something). They are really expensive classes, and he acts like he is a know-it-all because he directed a movie! He’s not really just teaching us HOW to act, but just how to do warm-ups for acting. He says they are necessary, but I am starting to think he is just into himself. I am starting to become not as determined for acting, and want to continue writing and learn guitar and voice lessons. I would love to be on Disney Channel shows and shows like that for kids like me, but my teacher doesn’t seem to be steering us in that direction. What should I do? Should I give it all up yet? For some reason, I really feel like I should continue writing this book series to get them published. I feel like I am somehow drawn toward it. But I have been focused on school and acting lately.

Ah. It would appear that you have been taken advantage of. Your agency is getting most of the money for these acting classes and either they or the instructor are getting a kick back. The reason, is that small agencies in out of the way places can not stay alive with honest business practices, there simply isn’t enough work to survive on 10% of an actors income when he/she works. So, they’ve sold a bunch of you classes.
If you want to pursue an acting career there are many ways to go about it and leaving that small town for college would be a first step.
