I just reformatted my hard drive and would like to install Greasemonkey again, but am afraid that it opens a door in my browser for viruses.

If you have a browser that is configured to allow active scripting, then yes, any time you encounter active scripting, whatever that script is ‘programmed’ to do your system will do it.
