Help! My speech is 1 minute too long, it’s six minutes and it needs to be 3-5. It is a school project, and it’s about why the arts should be stronger in education. Could anyone give me any tips on where to cut or change sentances to make them shorter? HELP ME!

Let’s see, what are we doing today? Math, French, history, English- hey, I thought I had band! Oh, right. I forgot. They took that out of the curriculum. Good morning Teachers and fellow students, there is one subject that is at the mercy of school board cuts more than any other. Have you ever wished to learn a more complicated instrument than recorder? Have you ever even tried using watercolor paints? Do you wish you had a different way to participate in drama than performing? You are not the only one. Catholic elementary schools barely come close to having satisfactory art programs, especially compared to Public schools. Is 2 art classes a week enough? I don’t think so. In my opinion, we should certainly have more access to drama, music, and visual arts programs.
There is a time in everyone’s lives when they step onto the stage. For some, it may be to sing, dance, or act. For others, it could simply be to clean up after a performance, or to make a quick announcement. But even for the latter, sometimes standing on a stage gives a feeling of excitement, and even achievement. Even as an audience, watching the stage curtains slowly separate to reveal the masterpiece of an act sends a thrill to all. Are you really shy? The dramatic arts are great at boosting self confidence. What is most important in drama, however, is cooperation. If the director is angry with an actor, and that actor is arguing with another actor, it will be harder to make a successful show. Let’s just say, you learn a lot about cooperation. Also, especially in improvisation games, problem solving skills are improved, because not only are you making decisions for a character, but you are doing it in a new perspective. Another thing, do you have to perform to involve yourself in drama? Absolutely not. Directors, screenplay writers, producers, and even movie critics are definitely involved in the dramatic arts. That is precisely the problem at school. There are lots of shy students who aren’t great at performing, so they get low grades, even if they could be great at writing scripts, or organizing actors. In school, we should not be limiting our drama classes to improv and performance. There is filmmaking, screenplay writing; all kinds of dramatic art that should be included.
Bono once said, “Music can change the world because it can change people.” In elementary and secondary school, we learn the basics of music- note value, technique, theory, and how to play instruments. If we get to the point in which we want a career in music, we begin to compose, and we are inspired by ourselves rather than music textbooks. But I think that it’s only possible to become a strong musician if you have received a proper education. And not just aspiring musicians should receive this education, but everyone. Music helps people in more ways than one may think; for one thing, it teaches discipline. Keeping focused and diligent practice disciplines the mind, making it sharp and clear. Another, music actually makes you smarter, in a sense. The left side of your brain is your logic and reason. It is used in math, science and reading. The right side of your brain is your creative and emotional side. The only time that they actually do work together is when a person sings or plays an instrument. For example, Albert Einstein’s fifth grade teacher told him he was stupid, and wasn’t capable of learning! However, after learning the violin, he was able to remember things much more easily. He just played his instrument, and knew the answer! Does this mean anyone who plays the violin will receive a stroke of genius? Not exactly. But it will be enough to noticeably improve grades in school. You see, in our school, we learn the recorder, and the basics of musical theory, and every year, we go back to the beginning. Most people in our classes can figure out note values, but that’s close to all they know, although we have been taking music class since first grade. Is this musical justice? Can we set the bar a little higher?
Last but not least, the dazzling, the exquisite, the creative visual arts. Art offers so many more benefits than it gets credit for. It is a way of releasing creativity, and it helps to express emotions. In fact, people who have difficult troubles can go to art therapy, where they are asked to paint, draw, sculpt, or use art in any other way. Art therapists basically use different methods to understand how their patients feel, and they do a very effective job at helping others work through their problems. It’s tough for you too to memorise and say such a long speech. It’s better if you divide your speech by 3 subtopics on which you can speak 30 seconds for intro and conclusion each – and 1 minute each on the subtopic that is related to your speech subject. It is a total of 1/2 + 1+ 1+ 1+ 1/2 =4mts.
