I don’t want to spend a bunch of money and I live in a pretty rural area so processing may be a factor. Thanks for any advice.

Super 8 is the best way to start off, but it requires considerable effort to find the equipment, film and a place for processing. Your best bet may be digital video. There’s a place called Rafik in NYC that may be of help. When I was in film school over 15 years ago our film was processed in Boston. I think the place was called Super 8 Sound or something like that. They should both have websites.
