Q&A: Is college necessary to become a film director? ?
Question by PixelPanda: Is college necessary to become a film director? ?
I am 17 years old and have always wanted to be a film director since forever. Movies are all I think about besides my artwork, I always watch them and try and critique them and think about movies of my own i would like to make. Ive even gone as far as writing some screenplays and short synopsis of screenplays i would like to make some day. I am in a movie making program right now at my high school but it frustrates me because my teacher is trying to teach us according to him “The only way to write a screenplay” where it tells you the exact pages your character is supposed to feel emotions and when certain characters/story elements are supposed to enter the story and so forth. I have noticed that all of my screenplays go against everything this book stands for and I noticed that my favorite movies screenplays go against everything that this book says as well. While he keeps telling me “This is the only way you are going to get a movie made in Hollywood is if you follow this formula. “A screenplay may seem expressive and artsy but it actually works like a Swiss time watch.” He also says that in college we will learn the exact same thing? Is this true? and if it is, then is going to college really necessary for becoming a director? (not to mention its apparently really expensive to go to an art school for film direction.)
Also the same thing has happened with my artwork. I took the first half of the art class at my high school but when I made my drawing she wanted me to change a bunch of stuff and asked me if I could make something less “dark and adult.” I didn’t want to do that because of the original theme I was going for and because I spent a lot of time on this picture already. While my classmates all drew pictures of football players, monsters, etc. (she still gave me an A even after I didn’t turn it in though 😀 because she said I was really advanced in art for my age.) I didnt take the next class because I realized that classes have never really helped me learn anything, because everything im good at I kindve just picked up on my own from doing and looking at other peoples artwork.

As I read an article “Yes” u have to have College/University diploma to get that job minimum of 4-5 years of studying. AS I my first choice is a animator director in the animation studio at George Brown College but seems like I have different choices and I will think about it.
