Q&A: Name this movie?

OK. There’s a movie that came out in the late 80s, early 90s. I can’t remember what it’s called.
I remember that it’s about a boy who gets sucked into an animated world. There were flying books that followed him around and guided him on his journey to turn the world back to normal, I think. In one of the early scenes, he’s in a library and opens a book that he’s not supposed to open and a big wave of colorful animation chases after him through the book shelves when he’s turned into a cartoon.
I loved this movie when I was little, and I’d really like to remember the name! Please help if you can.
